WASHINGTON, D.C. October 5, 2009 —The BrainScope Company today announced that Gail Wilensky, Ph.D. has joined its Board of Directors and, separately, that it has also formed a Medical Advisory Board consisting of distinguished physicians from multiple fields applicable to BrainScope’s focus on developing products for assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (including mild TBI, also referred to as “Concussion").
“Dr. Wilensky is one of the predominant health care thought leaders in the world today," said BrainScope Chief Executive Officer Michael Singer. “Her extensive background serving in top leadership positions throughout the federal government and healthcare community will be a vital asset to us as BrainScope continues to develop a medical device that can provide reliable, rapid and objective assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury."
Throughout her career, Dr. Wilenksy has shown a strong commitment to improving healthcare both domestically and internationally. She currently serves as a senior fellow at Project HOPE, an international health education foundation. She has served as President of the Defense Health Board, a federal advisory board to the Secretary of Defense, from 2008-2009. In addition, she has chaired and participated in numerous advisory committees, such as the President’s Task Force to Improve Health Care Delivery for Our Nation’s Veterans and the President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors. Dr. Wilensky also served as Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, now known as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where she directed all aspects of the Medicare and Medicaid health programs. In addition, Dr. Wilensky has chaired the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), which advises Congress on payment and other issues relating to Medicare.
“I am honored to become a member of BrainScope’s Board of Directors," said Dr. Wilensky. “With Traumatic Brain Injury rates on the rise, particularly in the military, there is an immediate need for BrainScope’s promising technology. I look forward to working with BrainScope’s Board members and management to help change how these injuries are assessed, providing clinicians crucial information that could help save lives."
BrainScope also separately announced today the creation of a Medical Advisory Board comprised of prominent medical and health experts from across the country with expertise in emergency medicine, military medicine, sports medicine, pediatrics, neurology and neurosurgery. The Medical Advisory Board consists of the following members:
